This is a first: 13% of school children aged 6 to 11 have a disorder « probable » mental health, according to the first results of the Enabee study which is to be unveiled on Tuesday June 20 par Public Health France (SPF), during meetings of the health agency. This represents regarding three children in a class of thirty students. This is the first time that an epidemiological study on a national scale has been carried out on the mental health of this population, for which there was until now no indicator. “Finally having a large-scale study on child mental health is good news, emphasizes Diane Purper-Ouakil, head of the child psychiatry department of Montpellier University Hospital, who did not participate in this work. The lack of data had also been reported during the health crisis, when crying needs had been highlighted on this occasion.

“It is a very big step forward, a first brick in a permanent epidemiological observation system”explains Stéphanie Monnier-Besnard, epidemiologist, Enabee project manager, for whom “The challenge is to talk regarding it, to inform, in order to accelerate awareness, the destigmatization of mental disorder”. “This study – representative of the French mainland population – gives a vision of the difficulties of the child at school. It is a victory to have carried out such a study in record time, making it possible to compare the views of children, parents and teachers”says Professor Richard Delorme, head of the child psychiatry department at Robert-Debré Hospital (AP-HP), who coordinated the scientific part of the study. “It also testifies to a strong commitment to a public policy in favor of children and their future. »

Behind this figure of 13% hide potential disorders of various kinds: 5.6% have a high probability of having an emotional disorder (anxiety or depressive disorders), 6.6% an oppositional disorder (irritability, angry mood, quarrelsome behavior that exceeds sibling quarrels and persists for several months), and 3.2% attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADHD). Notable fact: anxiety and depressive disorders are higher in girls while behavioral disorders are more frequent in boys.

“This is in line with data from the scientific literature”say the authors. A European study, published in 2016using a similar method, showed that 12.8% of children aged 6 to 11 had a probable mental health problem.
