Jazan is a beautiful region of Saudi Arabia, known for its unique flower “Phil” meaning “Arabic Yasmin” (cataract flower). Phil is not only an aromatic plant but also an important part of the culture and traditions of the region. Jazan people consider this flower as a symbol of happiness and prosperity and use it in weddings and other ceremonies. Even the fragrance of the cataract has found its place in Jazan poetry and local songs.
There are more than 1000 cataract orchards in Jazan with around 500,000 cataract trees. Every year, 600 tons of cataracts are produced here, which has become popular not only locally but worldwide. The fragrance of mutia is always present in the homes and gardens of Jazan and the women here are especially interested in planting it in their homes and gardens.
There are different varieties of moatia such as “Phil Azan” which is found in hilly areas and is famous for its large and yellow flowers. It is of large size and is often worn by men as a crown on their heads. Other varieties are “Phil Baldi” and “Phil Arishi” which are popular for their white and fragrant flowers especially when they bloom at night.
Several initiatives have been taken to further promote cataract production and industry in Jazan. In 2021, “Association of Flower and Aromatic Plants” was established to support farmers and provide them with better resources. Along with this, it is also planned to extract the oil from the palm and export it globally.
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture has also played an important role in promoting mulberry cultivation in Jazan and an annual mulberry fair is held here showcasing mulberry and other aromatic plants.
The youth of Jazan have also resorted to online platforms and e-commerce to bring this plant to global markets, making the flower more popular and people benefiting from its beauty and fragrance.
