Yaoundé Road Map for Sustainable Housing in Africa: A Game-Changer in Climate Action

2023-10-26 12:10:03

Gathered for two days in Yaoundé for the “Climate Chance Africa 2023 Conference”, 800 participants representing the diversity of non-state actors, from 40 countries, adopted a “Road Map for Sustainable Housing in Africa”, the first of its kind .

Discussed in around twenty preparatory workshops and videoconferences, this Road Map aims to be precise in its proposals for public action.

Some important points of the Yaoundé Road Map:

. Local authorities have an essential role to play; it is essential to strengthen their means of action.

. It is necessary to develop planning and land governance tools in sustainable housing strategies.

. The response to the demographic explosion in African megacities involves strengthening medium-sized towns and improving living conditions in the countryside, in order to avoid rural exodus.

. In view of the needs, we must integrate informal housing into global strategies, work on its gradual improvement, rely on the experiences that are developing there, and avoid construction in vulnerable areas.

. Urban climate action must benefit from a real strategy to avoid the explosion of GHG emissions, being part of the determined national contributions of African States.

. Eco-construction sectors and traditional housing know-how, adapted to the challenge of climate change, must be supported.

. It is obviously necessary to strengthen and diversify financing to meet these challenges, integrate the possibilities coming from climate finance, and include diaspora investments in sustainability strategies.

This Road Map has already received the support of the main networks of African local governments, important civil society organizations and others specialized in habitat issues.

It was officially handed over to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development of Cameroon, Célestine Ketcha Courtès and to the Minister of Decentralization and Local Development, Georges Elanga Obam.

It will be presented during COP28 in Dubai and during the 12th World Urban Forum in Cairo in 2024, the Climate Chance Africa 2023 Conference was part of the World Urban Campaign supported by UN-Habitat.
