Yaoundé landslide death toll rises to 15

The death toll from the landslide in Yaoundé, the Cameroonian capital, which occurred overnight from Sunday to Monday, increased on Tuesday to 15 dead, the government announced.
The search carried out by the rescuers between Sunday and Tuesday, “made it possible to extract 15 bodies from the rubble”, underlined in a press release, the Cameroonian Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji.

According to the Cameroonian government, there were also four injured who have been formally identified and the victims “are currently being treated” in hospitals in the Cameroonian capital.

The initial report communicated Sunday evening by the governor of the Centra region, Nasiri Paul Béa, reported 11 dead and several injured.

According to the Minister of Territorial Administration, it was “a tragic landslide that caused the loss of human lives” Sunday evening in the Damascus district of Yaoundé.
Several people were gathered in the Damascus neighborhood for a funeral ceremony when the landslide occurred.

Landslides are often deadly in Yaoundé and Bafoussam in the West region of Cameroon.

Last October, a teacher was killed in a landslide in Yaoundé.

On October 29, 2019, at least 43 people were killed in another landslide in Bafoussam in the West region, located 300 km from Yaoundé, the Cameroonian capital.
