The Texas Rangers announced today that the club has acquired right-hander Albert Abreu and left-hander Robby Ahlstrom from the New York Yankees in exchange for catcher José Treviño. Abreu is added to the Rangers’ major league roster, which remains at the 40-man limit.
Abreu, 26, went 2-0 with a 5.15 ERA (21 ER/36.2 IP), one save and 35 strikeouts in 28 relief appearances over multiple stints with the Yankees in 2021, his first extended action in the Majors. Leagues following reaching the Major Leagues. he debuted in 2020.

Although he has pitched exclusively in relief in the majors, the right-hander has worked primarily as a starter for seven seasons in the minors, where he has a 20-30 career record, 3.77 ERA (191 ER/455.2 IP), and 9.4 strikeouts per game. 9.0 innings in 115 games/87 starts.
Trevino hit .239 with 5 home runs and 30 RBIs last season, making a team-high 81 starts as a catcher. The Corpus Christi native has spent his entire eight-year professional career in the Texas organization since he was drafted by the club in the sixth round of the 2014 MLB Draft.

Treviño was active in the community during his time with the Rangers, Treviño was the team’s nominee for the 2021 Roberto Clemente Award and received the 2021 Harold McKinney Good Guy Award and the 2020 Richard Durrett Hardest Working Man Award presented by the DFW Chapter of the BBWA.
