Yankees Falter in Season’s Longest Duel

Yankees Falter in Season’s Longest Duel

Pinch-hitter Lane Thomas contributed the go-ahead double, which sparked a six-run rally in the 12th inning, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the New York Yankees 9-5 on Sunday in the longest game of the major league season.

Both clubs entered the night leading their respective divisions in a tense start to their three-game series that has a October flavor at Yankee Stadium. The same teams could meet again in the playoffs.

Dominicans Juan Soto and Aaron Judge hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, but Cleveland responded to tie the game 3-3 after four innings.

Despite numerous opportunities from both sides, neither attack managed to score again until the twelfth inning.

Thomas was hitting .113 in 16 games before coming in for Bo Naylor to start the 12th inning. He found a 2-2 sinker from left-hander Tim Mayza (0-2) and sent the ball into right field to score automatic runner Daniel Schneemann.

Tim Herrin (5-0) got the win, helped by Schneemann’s diving catch in right field that left two runners stranded in the 11th.

DOMINICAN Jose Siri hit a home run with two outs in the eighth inning to break a scoreless pitching duel and give the Tampa Bay Rays a 1-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Shane Baz (1-2) earned his first win in more than two years. He allowed three hits, struck out four and walked three in 7 2/3 innings.

He had not won since July 3, 2022, in Toronto. The right-hander missed the entire 2023 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Siri’s solo shot sent the ball flying out of center field. It was his 15th homer of the season, and it ended the day for starter Joey Estes (5-6), who had a terrific duel with Baz in front of just 4,377 fans.

Dominican Edwin Uceta got the last four outs to end the 1 hour and 54 minute game, earning his first career save.

In Chicago, Cody Bellinger hit a two-run double and Dansby Swanson homered as the Cubs beat the Detroit Tigers 3-1.

Bellinger went 2-for-4 to lead Chicago. Javier Assad (6-3) pitched 5 2/3 innings for the Cubs, allowing one run on six hits and striking out seven.

Tyson Miller, Drew Smyly and Porter Hodge pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit each, to close. Hodge earned his second save.—AP
