Yamamoto Yunobu: The Yankees, the Dodgers, and the Bid for Yushin Yamamoto

Sal Licata, one of the morning hosts of WFAN, New York’s most well-known 24-hour radio station with sports call-in programs, criticized the Yankees for missing out on the Sawamura Award for three consecutive championships and Japan’s forced investment of Yushin Yamamoto. However, what he cannot accept is the evil empire. The bid was actually lower than that of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who finally won the bid of US$325 million in 2012, and even lower than their rivals in the same city, the Mets.

Sal Licata said: “Even if the Mets have no chance at all, the Yankees do. But the Yankees’ offer, let alone the Dodgers, can’t even match the Mets. If the same offer was made but Yamamoto mightn’t be recruited, I wouldn’t say that here. . He’s going to get $25 million a year from the Dodgers and the Yankees won’t give that much, so I don’t see why they can’t increase that number.”

He concluded: “If the ‘Evil Empire’ is going to come back, why can the Yankees accept their offer for No. 3? This is unacceptable.”

The Yankees aimed to strengthen the left-handed and starting rotation in the off-season, and successfully sold pitchers Michael King, Drew Thorpe, Jhony Brito, Randy Vásquez and catcher Higashioka Kyle (Japanese) to the Holy Land at the winter meeting. The Padres traded for Juan Soto, but lost in the battle for Yushin Yamamoto.

There are currently several big-name pitchers left in the free agent market, almost all of whom are left-armed, including former Yokohama DeNA Bay Stars ace Shota Imonaga, who announced his challenge to MLB, who was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals last August and traveled to Texas this year. The Cavalry helped the team win its first World Series championship, Jordan Montgomery, and this year’s National League winner, left-hander Blake Snell, who won one Cy Young Award in each of the two leagues.
