Yamaha shows a hydrogen combustion buggy and an electric three-wheeled sports car

Yamaha has unveiled several interesting concepts at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show that show the company’s idea of future mobility. The two most interesting designs are the Tricera three-wheeler and the hydrogen-powered YXZ1000R.

The Tricera looks like an ultra-modern version of the Morgan Super 3 which the company describes as an “open-top electric tricycle” that offers a Kando-filled riding experience. Kando is a Japanese word that describes the “deep satisfaction and intense emotion we experience when we encounter something of exceptional value.”

The Tricera promises responsive dynamics, and the company notes that it will have a rear-wheel steering system, which will pose a new challenge for drivers. Of course, you can still control the car with the front wheels, but manually steering the rear wheels will be fun, whether on a quiet road or a race track.

While most automakers investigate autonomous driving technology, Yamaha says that with the Tricera it is going back to basics to offer motorists the Kando experience behind the wheel.

The layout is interesting, with the driver and passenger sitting in separate compartments. The interior is unadorned, with a steering wheel and digital instrument panel. Yamama hasn’t given details on its performance, but the Tricera is supposed to be light and capable of delivering spirited performance, like an electric three-wheeled MX-5 Miata.

The second concept is designed to provide drivers with many emotions, although in a different way. The YXZ1000R looks like one of Yamaha’s many off-road buggies. However, this is powered by a direct injection hydrogen combustion engine that produces almost no pollution except traces of burned engine oil.

Yamaha has been developing hydrogen-powered combustion engines for some time and even presented a 450 horsepower V8 last year that might be used by Toyota.

Yamaha says it is experimenting with hydrogen propulsion “to keep the unique appeal of these engines, such as their sound and feel, alive well into the future.”

While most automakers are putting all their effort into electric propulsion, Yamaha is among the few investigating different avenues for zero-emission mobility.

The Tricera three-wheeler shows that Yamama is not opposed to electric vehicles, but the YXZ1000R makes an argument for hydrogen propulsion.

Toyota believes in this too and has repeatedly stated that it will take a measured approach towards electric cars despite contrary reactions from various organisations.

With any luck, hydrogen-powered vehicles will become more widespread in the coming years, especially in countries where electric vehicles are not viable.
