Yaël Braun-Pivet calls for a “case-by-case” approach for LFI candidates in the second round

The outgoing president of the National Assembly called on Monday July 1st to give “no votes” to the National Rally (RN) in the second round of the legislative elections, by voting for the left bloc in the “vast majority” of cases, with the exception of certain LFI candidates.

“Excuse me for taking each case into account.” The outgoing president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, called on Monday, July 1, to give “no votes” to the RN in the second round of the legislative elections, by voting for the left bloc in the “vast majority” of cases, with the exception of certain LFI candidates, the day after a first round won by the RN.

The Renaissance MP, candidate for re-election, thus considers on RMC-BFMTV “that the immense majority of the left bloc is republican and therefore we can, without difficulty, call for voting for them and that is what I do for the ecologists, the socialists and the communists”.

“Within La France Insoumise, I make a distinction, excuse me for taking each case into account, for being nuanced,” she continues.

A distinction between Caroline Fiat and David Guiraud

Illustrating her point, Yaël Braun-Pivet says that she “does not treat Caroline Fiat and Mr Guiraud” in the same way, two outgoing deputies from La France Insoumise who qualified for the second round.

Legislative elections: the incredible story of a lightning campaign

Caroline Fiat is “a great republican” and David Guiraud “does not adhere to the values of the Republic and expresses anti-Semitic ideas”, judges Yaël Braun-Pivet. Also, “Caroline Fiat deserves to be supported when the other deserves to be fought night and day”, according to the Renaissance candidate.

“Look at who is a candidate in your constituency and is this person in the Republican arc or is he not,” she tells the French.

Yaël Braun-Pivet qualified for the second round in the 5th constituency of Yvelines with 42.80% of the vote, ahead of Yassine Benyettou (New Popular Front) who came second with 27.32% of the vote and Jacques Myard (RN) who obtained 22.9% of the vote.

What instructions for the presidential camp?

At the national level, this first round was won by the RN with 33.14% of the votes. In second place, the left, under the banner of the New Popular Front, reached 27.99% in the first round, ahead of the presidential camp, Ensemble, which obtained 20.04% of the votes.

Faced with this progression of the extreme right, the presidential camp has not given clear instructions for the second round. In a written statement, Emmanuel Macron called for “a broad, clearly democratic and republican gathering for the second round” against the National Rally. Several members of his movement, such as Édouard Philippe or Bruno Le Maire, have specified that this gathering did not include the candidates of La France insoumise or some of them.

Former Prime Minister Édouard Philippe even considered that “no vote” should “be cast for the candidates of the National Rally, nor for those of France Insoumise”. However, a few Macronist voices, including those of Minister Roland Lescure, were raised to “block the extreme right” including, if necessary, by voting for an LFI candidate.
