ABB Robótica partners with XtalPi to build automated laboratories with artificial intelligence

ABB Robótica and XtalPi have entered into a strategic partnership to produce a series of automated laboratory workstations in China. The new automated laboratories will increase the productivity of R&D processes in biopharmaceuticals, chemical and chemical engineering, and new energy materials.

More than 100 ABB GoFa™ collaborative robots automate laboratory workstations, accelerating R&D in the chemical and life sciences sectors

“Our collaboration with XtalPi represents another milestone for ABB’s collaborative robots in the life sciences sector,” said Jose-Manuel Collados, service robotics product line manager at ABB Robotics. “ABB Robótica and XtalPi will radically advance laboratory research and development through automation that works hand in hand with people. By enabling pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to develop new medicines faster and more cheaply, ABB is helping to advance research into disease prevention, creating healthier societies.

XtalPi is dedicated to driving smart, digital transformation in life science and new materials in the chemical sector.

In 2022, the AI technology company purchased more than 100 GoFa cobots to create automated laboratory workstations at its testing facility in Shanghai, China. This year, XtalPi officially launched the automation-centric brand XtalPi Intelligent Au-tomation with the aim of helping researchers through automation equipment.

ABB cobots are used by XtalPi Intelli-gent Automation in applications including sample transport, testing and quality control

Together with ABB Robótica, XtalPi Intelli-gent Automation is using GoFa™ cobots to automate the synthesis and crystallization processes involved in developing new medicines and materials for its target sectors.

Automated laboratory workstations can be customized to meet specific requirements, using different modules to complete various steps of the experiment. ABB’s GoFa cobots take on manual, repetitive tasks and work non-stop, accelerating the pace of experiments. The large volumes of high-quality data generated will help increase the efficiency of the Design-Make-Test-Analyze research cycle and provide a solid foundation for driving AI for science.

GoFa cobots are used by XtalPi Intelligent Automation to develop preparation workstations, dilution and filtration workstations, reaction workstations, UPLC test workstations, glovebox workstations, sample depots and guided vehicles automatically (AGV) to make laboratory research and development faster and more efficient.
Each automated workstation can perform hundreds of different experiments, with ABB’s GoFa cobots operating in a variety of challenging environments, including glove boxes – without humidity or oxygen – while carrying out complex tasks such as opening lids and placing equipment. laboratory, liquid handling, sample addition, filtration, dilution, magnetic stirring, rapid sampling and UPLC testing, with minimal supervision required.

AMRs equipped with GoFa cobots automatically transfer samples between workstations, increasing efficiency and further reducing costs.

Equipped with a GoFa cobot and four rotating columns, the automated sample warehouses offer compact and efficient storage and retrieval for laboratory reagents, making the process more efficient and fully traceable.
Chenxi Zhang, Director of Automation Product Management at XtalPi, said: “Through a partnership with ABB, we can increase efficiency in laboratories by implementing a human-robot integration model. We hope to combine XtalPi’s intelligent software system and industry expertise with ABB’s expertise in robotics to bring more innovative solutions to the pharmaceutical sector, which in turn will expand the use of automation and robots in the R&D process and will help automate laboratories.”

Experience in cobots for laboratories

This is ABB Robotics’ latest project in the laboratory automation market, which is showing significant growth, with revenue of US$5.1 billion in 2022, expected to increase to US$7.1 billion in 2028. 1
