A British company is to build the first Scottish factory to produce submarine cables that will supply energy from Morocco to Great Britain. It is part of the energy project to promote the energy transition in the United Kingdom.

The planning committee of the North Ayrshire Council in Scotland has given full approval to the XLCC company to start construction of the plant, which should be operational in 2026. This is reported on the XLCC website.

The plant is expected to create 900 local jobs and even more jobs in the supply chain. The demand for submarine cables will increase as more countries diversify their energy mix.

XLCC Director Ian Douglas said the global interconnection of electricity by sea is crucial for the energy transition. He thanked Irchar authorities for facilitating the establishment of the plant and said he would work with many parties to discuss distribution partnerships.

The Xlinks project to which the plant contributes is the longest submarine cable in the world, with a length of 3,800 km and a cost of approximately 22 billion dollars. Great Britain sees it as one of its most important projects for its energy transition.

Energy will be transported by cable from wind and solar fields in the Moroccan desert to the British home front, via the French, Portuguese and Moroccan coasts.

Xlinks wants to build a 10.5 gigawatt power plant in the Moroccan region of Guelmim Oued Noun, which will run entirely on sun and wind. These sources of energy are very powerful in this desert region. The project might create 10,000 jobs in Morocco.
