Xi Jinping: – The goal of stable cooperation with the United States has not changed

The United States has sent its national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, to the Chinese capital. Throughout the week, he has had meetings with several high-ranking politicians in China. On Thursday, his stay culminated when he met the Chinese president.

There, Xi Jinping said that the Chinese authorities are still committed to a good relationship with Washington.

– China’s commitment to the goal of a stable, healthy and sustainable development of relations with the United States has not changed, the president said, according to state media.

– We hope the US will work with China to meet each other in the middle, he added.

Planning conversation with Biden

During the meeting in Beijing, it has become clear that US President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping plan to have a telephone conversation in the near future. Biden himself has said that he is looking forward to the conversation, says Sullivan.

– President Biden is obliged to handle relations with China in a responsible manner, to ensure that competition does not develop into conflict or confrontation, says the security adviser.

Warning

But it has not only been a friendly tone during the stay. China has issued a clear Taiwan warning during the American visit.

The Chinese defense chief Zhang Youxia demands that the US stop its military cooperation with Taiwan.

– China demands that the US stop military cooperation with Taiwan, stop supplying Taiwan with weapons and stop spreading the false narrative about Taiwan, he said during a meeting with Sullivan.

On Wednesday, the talks were described as “sincere, substantial and constructive”.

During the meeting between Sullivan and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the latter was clear about the importance of mutual respect.

– The key to a smooth development in relations between China and the US lies in treating each other as equals, Wang told Sullivan, according to CCTV.
