Xi at the Eurasian security summit: – We must resist external interference

– We should come together to resist external interference, support each other firmly, take care of each other’s concerns and take control of our countries’ future and destiny as well as peace and development in the region, says Xi at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.

The SCO consists of China, Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. From Thursday, Belarus is also a member of the organization. The meeting takes place in Kazakhstan’s capital Astana.

– The world is once again at a crossroads. It is extremely important that the SCO stands on the side of justice, says Xi.

The main meeting will take place behind closed doors, but Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says the group will discuss the creation of new Eurasian security treaties on Thursday.

Putin said last month that a new regional security system was needed and that this should be open to all countries, including Nato members. On Thursday, Putin also met Iran’s interim president Mohammad Mokhber to negotiate a bilateral cooperation agreement. The agreement reflects the strengthening of the two countries’ ties, according to Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The goal of the security system should be to gradually remove all external military presence from Eurasia, Putin believes.
