Switzerland was spoiled by fate in Frankfurt. Protected by its seeded status, the selection of Murat Yakin can approach the preliminary round of Euro 2024 with real optimism.
Switzerland will indeed be opposed to Israel, Romania, Kosovo, Belarus and Andorra. The first two of this group will qualify for the final phase which will take place in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024. This preliminary round will begin on March 23 and end on November 21, 2023. If Switzerland were not to qualify directly , it would in all likelihood have the possibility of being among the six teams called upon to compete in the play-offs which will allocate the last three places.
Failing to finish in the top two of this group, however, seems unlikely for a team that has, in the last fifteen months, eliminated France at Euro 2021, edged out Italy in the preliminary round of the World Cup, and beat Portugal and Spain in the Nations League. Without insulting Israel, Romania, Alain Giresse’s Kosovo, Belarus and Andorra, Switzerland has a good margin.
The trip to Kosovo will, of course, be emotional for Captain Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri. The two men, who have brought so much to the Swiss team, will deliver in Pristina, where their roots lie, a match that will not be a match like the others.
