When it comes to implementing new, rather wacky features, Xbox rarely lacks ideas, the Redmond company proves it to us once once more.
Xbox is planning the ability to map keyboard keys to controller buttons in the future
It is through the latest Alpha and Alpha Skip-Ahead releases operating system that Xbox has rolled out this feature for members of the Xbox Insider Program.
As always, these test phases are primarily used to test prototypes, whether their ergonomics or their viability. If the results are conclusive, the final goal will obviously be to offer this possibility to all players. According to the official patch notes, only Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller are compatible at this time.
“For Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 and Xbox Adaptive Controller, the Xbox Accessories app now supports mapping keyboard keys to your controller,” the patch notes state.
To get started, open the Xbox Accessories app > Configure > create a new profile or edit an existing profile > select a button to map > choose Primary or Shift > then switch to the Keys tab.
You can also find this feature in the Xbox Accessories app on your Windows PC by joining the Windows Gaming preview from the Xbox Insider Hub. For more information on how to join the Windows Gaming preview, see the Xbox Insider Program FAQ.
Xbox clarifies that it is only possible to map a controller button to a single key and modifier key combination (Win, Shift, Ctrl, Alt). Moreover, some will fully support this mapping while others will only partially support it or not at all.
It’s hard to know when this future system update will be deployed, but we’ll definitely be watching closely.
Alpha users are getting a new 2308 update (2308.230720-2200) at 2:00 p.m. PT today. The #XboxInsider blog post linked below has more info, including what we’re tracking, recent fixes, and a new feature :
