At a time when Microsoft is at the center of video game news with the takeover of Activision-Blizzard, Xbox consoles are being talked regarding through developers.
The Xbox Series S: a problem for the industry?
Since the announcement of the two Xbox Series models, there has often been talk of the performance of the Series S, logically less powerful than its big sister. That being said, with its price of less than 300€, this machine offers a real alternative to certain players who cannot afford to pay more than 500€ for an Xbox Series X, or who swear only by dematerialized. A good thing for the community, but not necessarily for the developers…
During an interview granted to our colleagues from Gamingbolt, Kai Tuovinen, marketing manager of the Frozenbyte studio (Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy), rightly mentioned the possibilities offered by the Xbox Series S. According to him, if it is certainly a good option for gamers, this can potentially become problematic for creators:
More powerful hardware is always better from a developer’s perspective. I think for more graphics-intensive games, the S-series can become a bottleneck, as its support is needed. From a gamer’s perspective, I guess it’s a good option to have a more affordable console.
He insists by recalling that Trine 5: A Clockwork Conspiracy will be able to run in 4K at 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X, while the S version will only benefit from 1440p for a similar display frequency. Moreover, Larian Studios has similarly communicated to this effect recently, claiming to have encountered technical difficulties in making split-screen cooperation work on Baldur’s Gate 3 on the Xbox Series S… This has thus led to the postponement of the version Xbox.
And you, are you afraid that the presence of a less efficient console on the market will curb the evolution and innovation of the next games, especially in terms of graphics? Please let us know what you think in the comments.
