Matt Booty, president of Xbox Game Studios, a subsidiary of Microsoft’s video game industry, shared his views on QA testing using artificial intelligence (AI).
Multiple foreign media outlets such as VCG and PC gamers quoted President Booty’s remarks, saying, “The speed of QA testing cannot keep up with the speed of actual content production.” said.
President Booty said, “Even if a specific scene is edited during the production of a movie, it does not interfere with the development of the first half of the movie. However, in games, even small changes, such as changing the color of a character in the game, can affect the gameplay itself. On the game testing side, every time you add a new element, you have to look at both the big picture and the details holistically.”
Booty argued that the use of AI game test programs would become a reality. “At present, AI and machine learning have proven their ability to do a variety of tasks, including image generation. Therefore, the day may come when AI will perform game testing tasks just as it generates images according to specific commands.”
VCG, a game media outlet, predicted that the discussion of QA testing using AI in the game industry would be extensive. This is because more and more companies are looking for cost-effectiveness in large-scale game testing tasks.
However, the media predicted that labor-management conflict might increase if AI is applied to game testing, given that many game companies’ QA test employees have formed a union by asking for full-time employees over the past few years.
