Recently, Microsoft announced the end of Xbox Live Gold, which will be called Xbox Game Pass Core, a simpler version of Game Pass, which for many specialists, serves as a way to inflate the numbers of the service, since all Subscribers to the now-defunct Live Gold will now be considered Game Pass subscribers.
As we know, Game Pass has different subscription levels, each with an exclusive benefit package. Incredibly, a document from the European Commission, related to the merger between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard, revealed that the overwhelming majority of Game Pass subscribers are concentrated in the Ultimate plan, the most expensive.
According to the document, around 7 out of 10 Game Pass subscribers choose the Game Pass Ultimate plan. The European Commission believes that this is because Microsoft has made the plan the center of its commercial strategy, with access to games in the cloud by streaming on various devices.
This allows the player to choose how they enjoy their games, without restrictions to a specific device, which for CE represents a consumer-focused strategy.
The information in the document is heavily censored and we can only read part of the sentences, but it does inform that “with Game Pass Ultimate, which represents between 70-80% of Game Pass’s current million subscribers, Microsoft…”, which gives you an idea of the popularity of this plan.
The CE also says that Microsoft owns 73% of cloud games on consoles and 60% in the cloud market in general, which includes cell phones, computers and even televisions.
