Recently, Tim Stuart, Xbox’s financial manager, said he wanted to see the firm’s games “on all screens”, including PlayStation and Nintendo. This did not fail to react to fans of the brand, who fear a future in which Xbox no longer makes consoles and focuses solely on its services. Asked regarding the subject in the columns of Windows CentralPhil Spencer clarified the situation.
“It’s not in our plans”
The Xbox boss initially said that there were no plans to offer Xbox Game Pass on PlayStation and Nintendo, and that he also wanted to focus on how the teams continue to innovate to gamers who have invested in an Xbox console:
I’ll start by saying that we have no plans to bring Game Pass to PlayStation or Nintendo. This is not in our plans. But I think you’ve hit the nail on the head on what it means to own an Xbox.
What I want to focus on is how we continue to innovate for the people who are committed to owning our hardware platform. And how do we continue to make them feel good regarding their investment in what we’ve built.
According to him, the hardware teams have done an excellent job with the Xbox Series took towards us”:
I’m obviously going to have my own take on our material. But I think our hardware teams have done a great job with this generation’s Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, bringing value and performance to the hardware line.
When I think regarding investments in things like Game Pass, Xbox Cloud Gaming, cross play, cross save, and ID@Xbox, all of those things – I want us to continue to innovate, so that people who use our console feel that we are investing in the console to match the commitment they have made to us.
These statements should therefore reassure players who are attached to Microsoft consoles. However, this does not mean that Xbox Game Pass will never arrive on PlayStation or Nintendo.
Sony block Microsoft, et Microsoft block Sony
As we know, Microsoft wants to reach two billion players with Xbox Game Pass, and Spencer himself has already said he is open to the idea of offering its flagship service on other consoles.
The problem here probably still comes from an agreement that is difficult to find between Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. In the CMA documents revealed during the Activision-Blizzard affair, Sony indicated in particular that Microsoft did not allow it to offer PlayStation Plus on Xbox, while Microsoft for its part affirmed that Sony had blocked Xbox Game Pass from its ecosystem .
We therefore imagine that a “plan” would be quickly found if an agreement was reached. This is simply not the case yet and everyone will obviously have to take a step towards the other for this to happen.
