Do you remember the Dreamcast controller? Often considered one of the greatest of all time. One of its most interesting features was the VMU, a memory card with a small screen, which when inserted into the controller might give you additional information.
One game that used it cleverly was Resident Evil – Code: Veronica, which had your health visible on the tiny controller screen at all times. So why are we talking regarding this smart, but old solution? Well, it looks like Microsoft has something similar planned for Xbox. They filed a patent for an Xbox controller with an integrated touchscreen, which can be used for several things like quickly selecting different loadouts, accessing social media, checking your battery level, displaying important game information, changing the volume And so on.
As usual, a patent doesn’t automatically mean it will end up being used, but Microsoft is supposed to be researching new features for the Xbox controller, as the PlayStation 5 controller offered a lot of exciting new capabilities. We wouldn’t rule out an updated controller sooner or later, and having a useful touchscreen seems like something that would open up some pretty unique opportunities.
What do you think regarding this idea ?
Merci
