PC, PlayStation, and Xbox have been enjoying the fruits of Bethesda’s labors for many years, but that’s slowly starting to change.
In September 2020, Microsoft purchased Bethesda’s parent company ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion. This means that properties such as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls would be proprietary brands of Xbox. That being said, pre-existing titles like Fallout 4 et Bordeciel remained multiplatform.
Additionally, due to pre-existing agreements, Death Loop et Ghost Thread: Tokyo were timed exclusives on PlayStation, both of which are now not only available on Xbox, but also included in Xbox Game Pass. The tide began to change when figures like Red fall et Star Field became a console exclusive on Xbox. However, believe me, PlayStation gamers lack nothing when it comes to Red falland that is most certainly a dodged bullet.
In the future, it is more than likely that Ancient Scrolls VI et Fallout 5 will also be exclusive to the green brand. Recently, due to the legal battle between Microsoft and the US market regulator, the FTC, over the now finalized acquisition of Activision Blizzard, plans were revealed that Fallout 3 et The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion remasters are on the way.
At this point, given that Microsoft now owns Bethesda, it’s pretty much a given that both of the aforementioned remasters would end up being exclusive to Xbox as well as PC. Still, as both original games also released on PS3, perhaps there was at least a glimmer of hope that they might come to modern PlayStation consoles as well. Unfortunately, that may not be the case.
While unsure whether the sources are credible or not, Colt Eastwood stated during an episode of the XNC Podcast that both remasters would be Xbox console exclusives. That being said, if this news turns out to be true, I doubt it will surprise the masses.
It’s worth keeping in mind that both remasters wouldn’t have been completely PlayStation exclusive and neither was announced, so technically nothing was removed. However, without Bethesda’s takeover, the two remasters would probably have been available on Xbox and PlayStation. Regardless, we should take these rumors with a grain of salt until proven otherwise.
Both Fallout 3 et The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion are backwards compatible on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, and are also included in Xbox Game Pass with all previously released DLC.
