Xavi’s Controversial Remarks on Arbitration and Potential Sanctions: What Happens Next?

According to Cadena Cope, the competitions commission of the Spanish Federation (RFEF) does not plan to prosecute Xavi after his very harsh remarks against arbitration made after the match against Getafe (0-0).

Xavi saw red this Sunday in Getafe. The Barça coach faces a sanction which could amount to two suspension matches, or even three, if account is taken of his presence in the tunnel leading to the locker room after his exclusion, reports Cadena Cope. The presence of a player or a member of the staff is strictly prohibited from the moment he has received a red card.

“Today the product is a disgrace”

If the sanction is confirmed, Xavi will not be able to sit on the bench against Cadiz and Villarreal, and maybe even Osasuna, if it is extended to three matches. On the other hand, the Barça coach should not have to deal with the competitions commission, which will not take up his case, still according to Cadena Cope. Last season, Carlo Ancelotti was summoned without any charge being finally brought against him.

Very agitated in front of his bench throughout the match, Xavi was sent off in the 70th minute after claiming a foul on Abdé who went alone on goal. In a press conference, after the meeting, the Barça coach got angry with the arbitration, denouncing a certain number of contentious situations.

“The referee invented a hand (from Gavi, which cancels the possible penalty on Araujo, editor’s note). […] For me it is an injustice, a shame. We had a meeting with the referees. They told us that they would understand the coaches better, and that they would only whistle the obvious hands. For me this hand is not obvious. Everyone has seen it. They want less to go see the VAR. But why ? If it’s a fantastic invention that helps football… I don’t understand. […] Today the product is a disgrace? Yes today yes. It’s normal that people don’t want to watch football anymore with matches like this. […] We had chances but it wasn’t enough to win. We get one point, but it’s not enough.”
