In recent years, Xavier Naidoo’s public statements have repeatedly caused outrage. So he obviously doubted the existence of the corona virus, expressed anti-Semitism and told in a video that the devil is behind the “Fridays For Future” climate movement. Some of his song content has also been labeled as homophobic and racist criticized, the singer believed in the Reich citizen theory and was even accused of hate speech. Now, however, the reversal followed.

In a three-minute YouTube video entitled “One Love”, which the musician published on Tuesday evening on his channel and on Instagram, the 50-year-old surprisingly apologizes for his statements from the past. The trigger for the change of heart: the Ukraine war.

“I was on the wrong track”

The “brutal invasion” in Ukraine shook him up, especially since his wife is from Ukraine and the singer had to get some family members out of the country in the past few weeks. The suffering caused by the Russian invasion opened his eyes. “I had to ask myself critical questions regarding statements I made in the past. That was a reason for me to question myself, »said the 50-year-old in the video.

His conclusion: “I have recognized the wrong paths I have sometimes found myself on. And that I’ve made a lot of mistakes in recent years.” He became aware that he had “irritated and provoked” family and fans with disturbing statements. In the “search for the truth”, the singer “ultimately got lost”: “I opened up to theories and groups from which I distance myself without any ifs or buts. I was blinded by conspiracy stories and didn’t question them enough.”

He also allowed himself to be exploited in part and lost touch with reality. “I said and did things that I regret today.” The Mannheim musician now wants to part with his extreme past. «I distance myself from all extremes, right-wing and conspiratorial groups. Nationalism, racism, homophobia and anti-Semitism are not compatible with my values,” said the 50-year-old, summarizing: “I apologize and ask for forgiveness.”
