Xavier Bertrand once again favourite for Matignon, meeting of LR senators to define their position

One day, one name. On Monday, the name of the President of the Economic and Social Council (CESE), Thierry Beaudet, was circulating as a potential Prime Minister. The trial balloon quickly deflated. And it is Xavier Bertrand, already mentioned in the short list since this summer, who is now holding the rope for Matignon.

Emmanuel Macron discussed this subject with the President of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, and the presidents of the two parliamentary groups, Laurent Wauquiez and Bruno Retailleau. They assured that they would not oppose it, according to LR sources, confirming information from Le Parisien.

The leaders of the right, however, set two conditions for the head of state: “that he take a look around to ensure that the nomination of Mr. Bertrand does not have a majority of censure against it (and) that he takes up the legislative pact presented by LR,” the sources specified.

For its part, the entourage of the President of the Republic confirmed these interviews by adding that it continues “to test the hypotheses Xavier Bertrand and Bernard Cazeneuve”, without indicating whether the LR track is favored. The head of state will also consult the other political forces including the RN, to assess the risks of censure of a Bertrand government. For the National Rally, things are clear: the first group of the National Assembly with 126 members, would vote for censure against a government led by Xavier Bertrand, we learned Tuesday from the party.

The LR senators are meeting at 2:30 p.m. this Tuesday via videoconference. The Republican Right group of Laurent Wauquiez in the Assembly is doing the same as we write these lines.
