X (former Twitter) began charging $1 for new users who want to register on the platform. The measure, as explained by its directors, is to combat bots, spam and fake accounts within the social network.

The initiative, called “Not a boat”, will only be for users in New Zealand and the Philippines and for those who want to write and publish. For those who want to read it will not be necessary.

“Read for free, but write for 1 dollar a year,” public in his profile Elon Musk, now owner of the company. “It is the only way to fight bots without blocking real users. “This won’t stop bots completely, but it will be a thousand times more difficult to manipulate the platform,” he explained.

“New users who choose not to subscribe will only be able to perform “read-only” actions, such as: reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts,” explains X in its support blog.

“Bots” and spam within the social network are accounts generated automatically to publish content. These are not people or brands that generate the profile, they are automations that inject publications with diverse interests.

“At X, we are exploring the use of phone and payment verification, as well as identity verification, as part of a broader strategy to fight bots,” explained Eric Ferraro, a company engineer, in a post where he gave details of the possibilities of, for example, artificial intelligence capable of overcoming all types of barriers such as security questions, email verification, etc.
