X officially rolls out voice and video calling

There’s also a new toggle titled “Enable Voice and Video Calling” under the app’s settings, which states that you can “turn on the feature and then select the person you feel comfortable using it with.”

It includes options to allow voice and video calls from only people in your address book, people you follow, verified users, or all of them. You can then make a call by opening a direct message with another user, and choosing the phone icon in Top right corner of the screen, choose voice call or video call.

While the Shortly before it debuted, X owner Elon Musk had long hinted at adding voice and video calling to the platform as part of his goals to make it the “everything app.”

Musk recently said the feature will be available on iOS, Android, Mac and PC, “with no phone number required.”

It’s still unclear how widespread X will be in launching voice and video calls or whether even non-privileged users can use it.

Last month, Chris Messina, the hashtag’s inventor and open source advocate, discovered that X’s code indicated that users would have to sign up for X’s Premium subscription to use it. X did not immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment.

Musk also mentioned charging all users a yearly price to access the platform, and has already started making users in New Zealand and the Philippines pay $1.
