X allows making voice and video calls without a subscription

X is rolling out voice and video calls to users who don’t pay for the premium subscription service formerly known as Twitter or Bluebird.

Company engineer Enrique Barragán shared the news on the platform, and said that users will now also be able to receive calls from everyone on the app if they want.

“Voice and video calls were automatically turned on for us when we checked our Direct Messages settings menu, which was configured so we might only receive calls from people we follow. We already see the ‘Everyone’ option there, although it’s up for grabs by X users,” he added. “The most daring.”

The company initially launched the feature for Apple’s iOS users last year, giving paying subscribers the option to contact other people through the app.

The goal of the move was to make X the “everything” application, according to what the platform’s owner, Elon Musk, wants.

Earlier this year, this capability arrived on Android devices, but the ability to make calls remained limited to premium subscribers only.

Last month, Musk said that X would make voice and video calls available to everyone once the company was confident in its strength. We’re still required to subscribe to X Premium so we can make calls when we tap the phone icon in direct messages, but those who get the update will be able to make calls even if they’re not premium subscribers.

X’s official support page for the feature says that all accounts are able to make and receive calls, although both parties must be in contact via direct messaging at least once. In the past, it was said that “only premium subscribers have the ability to make voice and video calls.”
