On the occasion of the national council elections, the environmental organization WWF Austria has developed a program of more than 50 proposals for the future federal government. The most important demands include a massive nature conservation offensive, strong climate protection laws and a reduction in high levels of soil sequestration. Further recommendations aim to implement biodiversity strategies, reduce energy consumption and reduce food waste. “Politicians must better protect our environment at every level so that Austria can succeed in the long term and withstand crises. There is no way around this problem,” said Walker Horenstein, political director at WWF.
Therefore, WWF hopes that future federal governments will do the same ‘Ambitious, comprehensive plan’ Addressing the dual crises of climate and biodiversity. Furthermore, Austria should position itself in all EU votes as a vanguard in implementing the EU “Green New Deal” Location. Volker Hollenstein of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) said: “Binding targets and standards can create planning security, promote economic innovation and efficient investment.” Overall, the new coalition agreement requires a good mix of clear rules, laws and funding so that the coming transformation can be effectively implemented in a socially just way.
The Soil and Climate Protection Act is needed
On land consumption, WWF is calling for a national soil protection law that would set binding caps and further standards for space-saving spatial planning. “Severe land erosion is one of the country’s biggest environmental problems. Therefore, future alliances should absolutely include their own soil conservation programs in their work programmes,” said WWF’s Walker Horenstein. Equally urgent is the development of strong climate protection law, legally binding coordination of climate neutrality measures for 2040, a binding phase-out of oil and gas heating and a comprehensive transport transition.
In addition, WWF also calls for an expansion of CO2 pricing, a socially equitable climate bonus and a reduction of billions of euros in environmentally harmful subsidies, as Austria currently commits to the European Commission by 2030. “The future finance minister should present a binding reform program this year. The necessary foundations are already in place,” said Volker Hollenstein of WWF.
Restoration plans and biodiversity billions
EU renaturation regulations need to be well implemented. WWF said Austria should focus on restoring intact rivers, moors and forests, and needed an adequate budget for this. “Relatedly, politicians must also ensure and significantly increase financing for biodiversity funds in the long term. Intact nature is our best ally and a kind of life insurance for society as a whole. The investments triggered by Biodiversity Billion not only help the environment, but also create jobs and enhance crisis security.
Reduce food waste
Additionally, WWF calls for halving food waste by 2030. “Greater ambition and consistency, concrete binding emission reduction targets and measures are urgently needed across all sectors of the food chain,” said Volker Hollenstein, political director at WWF.
WWF’s advice to the future federal government is Online at the WWF website available. In addition, the environmental group surveyed all parliamentary parties on ten selected demands and provided the answers in its own report party check Classification.
