“Ironwoman” Marit Bergmann has Hawaii in mind
Wuppertal Things are going well for Marit Bergmann, in the truest sense of the word. The 30-year-old triathlete, who competes for the Wuppertal “YEAH!Sport” team, recently won the Ironman in Maastricht.

For the 3.8 kilometers of swimming, 180 kilometers of cycling and the final marathon, she needed 9:44 hours – and thus relegated all her competitors to the places. Bergmann had previously fought a close race with an athlete from the DLC Aachen Bundesliga team – and finally distanced her by a good minute. She left behind strong athletes from Italy, Austria and Belgium.
Marit Bergmann needed just 3:08 hours to run the 42.195 kilometers. This is a world-class time for women at the Ironman, especially since the Maastricht marathon was by no means easy because of the altitude difference.
The 30-year-old, who also competes for the Tri-Club Wuppertal in the first women’s team, has been looked following by Melanie Lüdorf and Stavro Petri (YEAH!Sport) for three years. In addition to training for swimming, cycling and running, “YEAH!Sport” also includes strength training and nutritional advice.
“It was her first start in an Ironman. We have meticulously prepared this with precise pace information. For example, we calculated that she should run the marathon at a pace that would finish her between 3:06 and 3:10. Opened up!” says Petri happily. “We also calculated that during the competition she needs to consume 1.5 grams of carbohydrates per kilogram of body weight and one gram of salt so that she doesn’t get into a hole energetically.”
Marit Bergmann had carried out the preparation in an extremely disciplined manner, in the final phase it was 24 hours of training per week. “Here she also completed several test competitions. She always finished on the podium”, Petri looks back with satisfaction.
It’s a steep career: Bergmann has only been doing triathlon for three years, before that she ran. She had a marathon personal best of 3:30 hours. This year she ran two marathons in preparation. In Berlin it took 2:59 hours, in Essen only 2:55 hours…
Marit Bergmann still wants to take part in the Frankfurt marathon in 2022 and compete in league competitions for the Tri-Club Wuppertal. Although she qualified for the World Championships in Hawaii with her victory in Maastricht, she decided not to fly there. “Next year Marit will start at the Ironman in Hamburg, where she will then accept the Hawaii slot,” announces Petri.
By the way: Mareen Hufe was the only athlete from North Rhine-Westphalia who was able to win an Ironman. Male winners from NRW are non-existent.
