Viktorija Golubic was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Nottingham grass tournament. The Zurich native lost 6-3 4-6 6-3 to American Alikson Riske, seeded No. 6.
Golubic (WTA 55) was playing in her first semi-final of the season and showed an ascending form during this English week which should launch her towards Wimbledon. But Riske (WTA 40) did not allow him to put the icing on the cake, namely to reach a final on grass for the first time in his career.
The American negotiated the important points better, managing to dismiss nine of the 14 break points once morest her (5/12 “only” for the Swiss).
Golubic was held back at the worst time. She broke to lead 5-4 in the 2nd set and won the round in stride, then the first game of the 3rd set. But the match was then interrupted for almost two hours by the rain, and Riske was able to regain control and slip into the final.
