WSG Tirol’s time without points in the Bundesliga is over. Coach Thomas Silberberger’s squad fought a 1-1 draw once morest LASK at the Tivoli Stadium in Innsbruck on Saturday and scored in the table for the first time at the start of the fourth round. Nevertheless, the Tyroleans remained in possession of the “Red Lantern” in front of the penultimate Blue and White Linz with the same number of points. The athletes only hold on to one win and are sixth with five points for the time being.

Both goals were initiated by serious defensive errors. In the 16th minute, Nik Prelec gave the home side a deserved lead, who clearly set the tone until the equalizer. Elias Havel (70th) saved Linz from defeat. The 20-year-old from Liefering scored in less than half a minute as a “joker” on his Bundesliga debut. After that, Linz pressed for victory, but were unlucky in the end.

Silberberger had not only spent a lot of time on the training ground with his squad in the past few days. “We talked more this week than we trained,” the WSG coach said before the game. The kickers were also allowed to provide information regarding their desired line-up. In the starting formation there were only two changes compared to the 0:1 in Altach. Matthäus Taferner was allowed to make his starting eleven debut at the new club in midfield, while captain Felix Bacher was back in central defence.

Taferner almost got off to a dream start, but his shot was just blocked by a player from Linz (2′). The Tyroleans also showed a strong reaction following the disappointing performance in Vorarlberg and dictated what happened. The early lead followed as a reward. After a misplay by Stojkovic, Aleksander Buksa served Prelec with an ideal pass, which defeated Tobias Lawal. The ex-ÖFB-U21 team goalkeeper prevented a double hit in a Bacher header (18th) and a higher deficit in a Buksa finish with his head (35th).

Linz didn’t get going offensively either, the most dangerous thing was a hasty shot from Moses Usor, which went wide (45′ + 1′). After the restart, the hosts continued to control events, but failed to close the sack prematurely. Prelec didn’t put the ball in the goal following a corner (48′), Lawal fended off an Üstündag long-range shot (53′). Nothing indicated that LASK would equalize, but thanks to the active help of the Tyroleans, it fell.

After a failed Bacher back pass, Havel didn’t hesitate and didn’t give Adam Stejskal a chance. That was a wake-up call for the people of Linz and a major setback for the WSG. The guests dominated from that point on, but twice Ibrahim Mustapha, Havel and Philipp Ziereis missed the winning goal. So the momentum following the 2-0 derby victory might not be taken. As was often the case in the past, there was no success on Tyrolean soil.
