An American was released Monday in New Orleans following spending the past 29 years behind bars for a crime he ultimately did not commit.
A man named Patrick Brown was found guilty in 1994 of raping his 6-year-old stepdaughter.
During the trial, the victim did not speak up to recount her experience, and the jury relied largely on what adults believed the girl had said, reports the district attorney’s office. district of Orléans Parish, in a press release.
Since 2002, his daughter-in-law has campaigned for Mr Brown to be freed and the investigation re-opened to find the ‘real culprit’.
His efforts finally paid off.
“The District Attorney’s Office conducted a thorough investigation and evidence, which has remained consistent over the past 20 years,” the statement said.
“We have therefore requested that the court immediately rectify this injustice,” it added.
In an interview with CNN, Mr. Brown’s lawyer, Kelly Orians, indicates that although she welcomes the court’s decision, several questions remain unanswered.
“There is reason to celebrate [mais] it will never make up for the loss, hurt and trauma that Mr. Brown, his daughter-in-law and their family have had to endure over the past three decades,” she said.
