The Bernese police arrested Thursday around 03:50 a motorist in the wrong direction on the A6 motorway in the Wankdorf sector in Bern. The driver fled in an unmarked police car. He was seriously injured during the arrest.
After being arrested by the police while driving in the wrong direction, the driver managed to steal an unmarked police car parked on the spot in order to artificially create a traffic jam to avoid frontal collisions. He then fled towards Thun.
“Several shots were then fired by the intervention forces. The man continued on his way,” said the Bernese police.
At the height of the Ostring exit, another unmarked police car blocked his way. The two vehicles collided. “With the help of other response forces and by engaging the incapacitating device, the man was finally able to be arrested,” police said.
Highway closed for several hours
During the events, the motorist was seriously injured. A team of paramedics took him to the hospital in critical condition. The motorway between Wankdorf and the Ostring exit in the direction of Thun was closed for several hours.
Several departments of the Bernese cantonal police, a team of ambulances, Schutz und Rettung Bern, the Institute of Forensic Medicine of the University of Bern, the Roads and Bridges Office of the Canton of Bern as well as the Institute for of Zurich intervened.
The investigations in connection with the wrong-way driver and his flight are carried out under the direction of the regional public prosecutor’s office of Bern-Mittelland. A call for witnesses has been launched. The police are looking for any photos or videos.
