The incident occurred on August 27th, as the clinic announced in a broadcast today, Saturday: A 73-year-old patient who was hospitalized in Bad Ischl for treatment due to a serious illness was given medication in the evening hours , which was actually intended for another patient. The mix-up was discovered immediately and the specialist on duty was contacted immediately.
Since the patient felt well following taking the oral painkiller, he was monitored closely. During the regular checks, the patient was conscious and had normal vital parameters – until 12:20 a.m., the clinic said. When the medical staff wanted to check the 73-year-old’s values once more, he was found lifeless. Resuscitation began immediately, the man was stabilized and transferred to the intensive care unit. However, the 73-year-old died there on the evening of September 1st.
The clinic reported the patient mix-up to the responsible public prosecutor’s office in Wels on August 29th. As the Upper Austrian Health Holding reports, there were discussions with the widow and relatives of the now deceased. In addition to personal support, they were also offered appropriate legal advice from the Upper Austrian patient and nursing representative.
It is currently unclear whether the 73-year-old died because of the pain medication that was not intended for him or because of his serious underlying illness. The Wels public prosecutor’s office has initiated investigations and ordered a judicial autopsy.
