Writer Stefanie Jaksch finds light in dark times

I have been a morning person for as long as I can remember. My most productive time of the day is at the beginning of the day, when almost everyone is still sleeping, when the city outside my window isn’t an avalanche of cars rolling by, and when most apartments aren’t illuminated by lights yet , when night still guards its foothills. I have developed a habit of sitting at my desk in the dark and letting the thoughts come and go, thoughts about the day ahead, thoughts about unanswered questions old and new that sometimes scare me and sometimes encourage me I. During those first, cautious stages of sobriety, I like to let the darkness surround me, finding it comforting, like a blanket that allows me to be temporarily indifferent to all the endeavors associated with a successful day. There are no light signals to me during these times: you don’t have to do anything, take your time, stay a while, the signal to start the day hasn’t come yet (or I ignored it).
