Czech wrestler Artur Omarov missed the Olympic Games in Paris due to an Achilles injury. He was injured in training before flying to the venue of the Games and is undergoing surgery. The Czech Olympic Committee informed about this in a press release. Due to a hand injury, tennis player Markéta Vondroušová, who was supposed to defend her silver medal from the last Olympics in Tokyo, also missed the start under five rings. The number of Czech athletes for Paris was thus reduced to 111.

Thirty-five-year-old Omarov, who won bronze at the World and European Championships last year, was looking forward to his second start at the Olympic Games in the category up to 97 kilograms. The native of Tanta in Dagestan has represented the Czech Republic since 2010, and three years ago he jumped eleventh in Japan.

He was injured at the end of the last intensive wrestling training. He was scheduled to leave for Paris on Tuesday. “Now Artur has to have his leg fixed, it usually takes three to six weeks. It’s sad, but it is absolutely impossible that he could participate in the Olympic competition,” said Jiří Neumann, the chief physician of the Czech Olympic team.
Second absence
Omarov wanted to add an Olympic medal to his collection in France, but his dream was dashed. “The information about Arturo’s injury and the subsequent operation hit me very hard. It is incredibly sad news for him, for Czech wrestling, and I dare say for Czech sport as well. I see it as a tremendous sporting tragedy,” said Robert Mazouch, chairman of the Czech Republic Wrestling Association.
“I am extremely sorry that Artur will not complete his sporting journey at the Olympic Games in Paris, where he had the ambition and performance to realistically fight for the Olympic medal, which is the only one missing from his collection,” continued Mazouch. “For me, Artur is a great champion who has done amazing things for Czech wrestling and sports, which we are extremely proud of. At the moment, I mainly want to wish him a speedy recovery,” he added.
The head of the Olympic expedition, Martin Doktor, also regretted further losses in the Czech team. “We are all very sorry that Artur cannot fulfill his dream in Paris. But now we’re keeping our fingers crossed for him to get better as soon as possible,” said the Doctor.
