Last week, Blizzard announced the arrival of patch 10.2 for World of Warcraft: Dragonflight. A major update planned for this spring which introduces an area players have dreamed of for over 15 years.

WoW: 10.2, last major patch

Last week, Blizzard shifted gears in terms of communications for World of Warcraft. Ion Hazzikostas (Game Director) and Holly Longdale (Vice-President and Executive Producer) engaged in the interview game. They went into detail regarding the design philosophy that structured the development of the game, the major shift taken by the teams regarding the narration of new events in Azeroth or even what can await players for the future of the MMO. Next year, World of Warcraft will celebrate its 20th anniversary. As far as the short term is concerned, the future is already written.

At the same time as the game interviews, Blizzard also communicated regarding update 10.2. Entitled Guardians of the Dream, it will be the last major update to the Dragonflight expansion. It features the antagonist Fyrakka: she wants to appropriate the power linked to Amidrassil, the new world tree. The champions of Azeroth will therefore go in search of help, entering into talks with other dragonflights. Like previous major updates, 10.2 also introduces a new zone to explore: players will set foot on the lands of a small part of the Emerald Dream.

WoW: a dream come true

An area that lives up to its name since it has also been the dream of players since the beginning of World of Warcraft. The area was even originally planned by the developers. It was there that players were welcomed once they died. They might even carry out quests there and come across other deceased protagonists but the idea was then put aside. Almost 20 years later, it seems to have made its way into the minds of developers since the Emerald Dream constitutes a zone in its own right. However, some players are disappointed with the way. On Reddit, some players explain that they expected more:

Right now, it seems like people are pretty pissed off that this place that people have been waiting for since 2004 is just a small area that they’ll go to for a few months and probably never see once more. The design of the zones doesn’t seem to be very inspired either and resembles zones that already exist. Disappointing.

This comment summarizes the states of mind of certain fairly vehement players. It’s also a way for them to show their attachment to certain parts of WoW lore and that they would have liked to see more of it. On the other hand, nothing tells us that the small part of the Emerald Dream reserved for players for 10.2 is not the tree that hides the forest: in recent days, theories have multiplied concerning a possible revolution in World of Warcraft . It would then be a very nice way, for the 20th anniversary of the game, to salute the origins of the MMO and the progress made since then.
