Wout Van Aert’s 2022 Cycling Program Revealed: Focus on Giro, Classics, and Olympics

Wout van Aert revealed the broad outlines of its program this Thursday in Amsterdam during the official presentation of the Visma Lease a Bike team.

The main novelty lies in its absence during the next Tour de France. The rider from Herentals has in fact opted for the Giro next May, an appointment clearly incompatible with participation in the Tour de France and the pursuit of his other major objectives this season: the Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix and the Olympic Games.

“It’s a big loss because he’s one of the best runners in the world“, reacted Jonas Vingegaard. “I hope we’ll still get there without him.”smiled the Dane who extended his contract by one year, until 2028, with the Dutch team.

“I’m going to focus mainly on the Classics” said van Aert. “I am also very excited to ride the Giro. Winning a stage will be my goal, more than one if possible. It’s a tough race but there are a lot of opportunities.” smiled the rider from Herentals, confirming in passing that he will not aim for the general in Italy.

Wout will not go for the general”, agreed Merijn Zeemanthe team’s sports director.

A possibility of seeing van Aert and Vingegaard together at the Vuelta was also raised by Zeeman but no decision has yet been made by the team. The Belgian rider nevertheless confirmed to our microphone that we would be heading towards this scenario. “After the Giro, I will take a little vacation but then I will prepare for the goal of the Olympic Games with an altitude course. This will also help me to be ready for the Vuelta.”declared van Aert into our microphone.
