This soap opera punctuated the week. Will Microsoft be able to go through with its very ambitious project to buy Activision Blizzard to make a big leap forward in the world of video games? Or will the Redmond firm be thwarted by measures working for healthy competition? While waiting to find out, we would like to have your opinion as part of our survey of the week.
Announced with great fanfare in January 2022, the proposed takeover of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft for $68.7 billion hit a major hurdle this week. This is an important project, as it would allow Microsoft to get its hands on very lucrative licenses like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft or Candy Crush. A takeover a little too juicy for Sony’s taste which positioned as a major opponent of this affair.
Microsoft’s big campaign
Feeling the wind turned, Microsoft launched a major communication campaign to defend its project. The firm does not have hesitated to attack Sony publiclyand to convince the first American video game union to support it. To isolate Sony, Microsoft also offered contracts with Nintendo and Valve to ensure that Call of Duty will not become an exclusive.
Arguments that did not convince the FTC, in charge of regulating competition in the United States. She decided to sue Microsoft to completely block the takeover. According to her, Microsoft would gain too much leverage by getting its hands on its franchises in the market for high-performance consoles and subscription services. In addition, it would not be possible to trust Microsoft following the acquisition of Bethesda, since the next games from the publisher will be exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem.
