NASA researchers explain that these liquid rains, which should be solid, are a consequence of changing weather patterns, vapor, and ice-albedo feedback.

A study carried out by researchers from the NASA revealed that rainfall in the Arctic Ocean is being affected by the increase in rainfallwhich would be a consequence of increased temperatures, becoming a worrying trendsince they occur in liquid and not solid form.

According to the study published by the scientific journal Journal of Climate, between 1980 and 2016 a increase in geographic distribution of rainfall in the Arcticwhich was visualized by darker areas of the map of the extreme north of the Atlantic and the Barents Sea.

According to NASAone of the problems with rains in the Arctic is the ice-albedo feedback loop. Experts define albedo as the ability of a surface to reflect radiation, such as electromagnetic energy from the sun. This ability is also related to the color white, which can reflect all color frequencies.

The rain that falls on the Arctic Ocean is darker in color than ice, which is why it absorbs more solar radiation, since dark tones reflect and absorb all frequencies, unlike white, which only reflects them. “If it rains during the sunny months, the surface will be darker because the snow is wet compared to fresh, dry, thick snow. This wet surface will begin to absorb a greater amount of solar radiation.“he explained Linette Boisvertco-author of the study.

Steam, another problem

Another reason that makes the atmosphere warmer is steam. This is because hot air is capable of accumulating more humidity and, therefore, producing more steam, which reflects the energy and bounces back to Earth, thus preventing this energy from escaping. That is, steam is considered a greenhouse gas, so the more steam, the warmer the planet is.

Other problems caused by these rains are changes in weather patterns that are being recorded in the lower latitudes of the northern hemisphere, which are usually related to the change in temperatures recorded in the oceans.
