Worldwide problems with Microsoft Exchange Server

The beginning of 2022 will cause Microsoft Exchange servers worldwide to stumble. The problem affects self-hosted Exchange servers that have been unable to send mail since midnight of the new year. The reason is the conversion of 01/01/2022. The value 220101000 causes an error in the server’s anti-malware scan engine, which is actually supposed to sort out malware, but crashes so that no more emails can be sent at all.

The problem is likely to affect many Mac users in companies and organizations, because Exchange servers are used in many areas for e-mail.

The most varied versions of the Microsoft Exchange server and also the most varied patch statuses are apparently affected. Not all servers worldwide are affected by the phenomenon: It can be assumed that the malware scan is simply not switched on for them. And that is the temporary and unacceptable solution to the problem in the long run: Simply switch off the anti-malware scanner. To do this, the PowerShell script Disable-AntiMalwareScanning.ps1 must be executed. In some cases the server has to be restarted followingwards so that the e-mails can be sent once more.

The tips come from Microsoft themselves and were rolled into one Support-Dokument presented in detail.
