According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Sweden, stockpiles of nuclear warheads around the world increased by a total of 86 over the past year.

In its 2023 annual report released today (12th), SIPRI pointed out that nine nuclear powers, including the United States, Russia, Britain, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel, continued to modernize their nuclear weapons in 2022.

In particular, several countries deployed new nuclear weapons or nuclear-capable weapons systems during this period, SIPRI said.

As of January 2023, the group estimated the world’s actual nuclear warhead stockpile to be 9,576, an increase of 86 from the same month last year.

At the same time, the United States maintained the same number of 3,708 aircraft as in the previous year, Russia increased by 12 to 4,489, China is estimated to have increased from 350 to 410, and North Korea increased from 25 to regarding 30.

SIPRI Director Dan Smith said the world is “drifting into the most dangerous period in human history.” It is urgent to find a way to work together to cope.”

Meanwhile, SIPRI said that the number of nuclear warheads around the world, including retired ones, was 12,512, down 200 from a year ago, mainly because the US and Russia are gradually dismantling more than 1,000 retired nuclear warheads.
