A 18-kilogram cat that caused a stir on the internet is now on a diet. His new owner wants to lose weight with him.
Diet is the order of the day for Patches, the American tomcat. The pet, which has become known on the Internet for being massively overweight, is said to be losing a lot of weight with its new owner. Dubbed the “world’s fattest cat” by some media, some of the 18.3 kilos he weighed are now set to disappear. So said Kay Ford, who adopted Patch following a call from an animal shelter.
The velvet paw became known in mid-April when its previous owner might no longer take care of it and gave the animal to the “Richmond Animal Care and Control” shelter in the US state of Virginia. The facility’s director told Britain’s The Telegraph that this is the biggest cat he’s ever seen.
Patches did not fit in any of the cages and was initially placed in an employee’s office. The shelter took to social media to find a new home. Shortly therefollowing, Kay Ford got in touch, reported the facility on Facebook. She wanted to lose weight along with Patches, she wrote in her adoption application.
The diet seems to be bearing fruit: Patches has already lost a kilo in the first two weeks. But since he’s around three times the weight of an average tomcat, he may have a long way to go.
