The thirty-seventh World Youth Day is being held in Lisbon, Portugal, from the 1st to the 6th of August 2023, and it centers around the theme “Mary arose and ran” (Luke 1:39). In a video message he sent last May to the participants in the upcoming World Youth Day, His Holiness Pope Francis called for preparing with joy for this event, full of hope.

One month separates us from the upcoming Thirty-seventh World Youth Day in Lisbon, Portugal, on the theme “Mary arose and went in haste” (Luke 1:39), and it will be the fourth World Youth Day presided over by His Holiness Pope Francis, after the World Youth Days in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil in July 2013 on the theme “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28,19); and in Krakow, Poland, in July 2016 on the theme “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5,7); And in Panama in January 2019 on the theme “I am the handmaiden of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

On the sixth of last June, the program of the Apostolic Visit of His Holiness Pope Francis to Portugal was issued from the second to the sixth of August 2023 on the occasion of the thirty-seventh International Youth Day. May 2017 on the occasion of the first centenary of the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The International Youth Day in Lisbon was expected at the beginning of 2022 – that is, three years after the International Youth Day hosted by Panama – but it was postponed for a year due to the Corona pandemic. On November 22, 2020, on the feast of Christ the King, a delegation of Panamanian youth delivered the two symbols of World Youth Day, namely the cross and the icon of the Virgin Mary “Salus Populi Romani”, to a delegation of Portuguese youth, during the Divine Liturgy presided over by Pope Francis. In St. Peter’s Basilica, the Holy Father also announced the transfer of the celebration of World Youth Day at the diocesan level, from Palm Sunday to Christ the King Sunday.
