Will Smith scored a hat trick as the United States edged Slovakia 7-1 in the semifinals of the World Under-18 Hockey Championship on Saturday.
Trey Augustine was solid in front of the net, blocking 27 of 28 shots he faced.
Smith struck twice in the first period to help his club build a 3-0 lead with Cole Hutson also contributing. He confirmed his hat-trick following just 50 seconds in the second period.
Sal Guzzo made it 5-0 before Dalibor Dvorsky put the Slovaks on the board with his own goal.
Danny Nelson and Cole Eiserman then completed the scoring.
The Slovaks surprised Finland 3-2 in the quarter-finals. They are the Cinderella story of this competition, they who have won only two medals in their history, bronze in 1999 and silver in 2003. They will have the opportunity to add a third in the final consolation.
