His Excellency Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade, participated in the final meeting of the General Council of the World Trade Organization in Geneva, ahead of the organization’s thirteenth Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi from February 26 to 29.
The General Council, the highest decision-making body in the WTO outside the Ministerial Conference, provided a final opportunity for ambassadors and permanent delegates to advance negotiations on key issues before the Ministerial Conference.
Al-Zeyoudi, who chairs the current session of the Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization, pointed out at the meeting the importance of flexibility and consensus in the period preceding the conference in the Emirati capital, Abu Dhabi, noting that the thirteenth Ministerial Conference is an important opportunity to review and improve international trade rules to ensure that supply chains remain open and flexible.
He said: It is important that we come together, think creatively and cooperatively, and work to find a common formula for long-term consensus for a sustainable and comprehensive global trading system.
Discussions in the WTO General Council revealed that although all delegations share a commitment to the rules-based trading system, there are still a number of gaps in visions between countries that need to be worked on before the thirteenth Ministerial Conference.
While acknowledging these differences and the necessity of the work required to achieve consensus on them, His Excellency Dr. Thani Al-Zeyoudi expressed his hope that delegations would continue to search for areas of agreement and focus on common goals.
His Excellency stressed that the Thirteenth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organization is part of an ongoing series, and called on delegations to have a long-term vision for the global trade system, ensuring that the outcomes of the Ministerial Conference are consensual and pave the way for the Fourteenth Ministerial Conference and beyond.
The World Trade Organization, which includes 164 countries, is the only multilateral organization that oversees the rules of trade between countries, and is dedicated to enabling them to use trade as a means to raise living standards, create jobs, and improve the lives of individuals around the world. The Ministerial Conference, which is held twice a year, is the highest decision-making body in the World Trade Organization.
