Dakar, June 20 (APS) – World Refugee Day was celebrated Tuesday in Dakar with the aim of communicating on the achievements, progress, challenges in protecting refugees and finding durable solutions, noted the ‘APS.

This day, celebrated on June 20 each year, focuses on the theme: hope far from home, for a world where refugees will always have a place. Several of the best refugee students from elementary, first and second cycle secondary were awarded on the occasion of this day, to encourage their efforts at school.

According to the organizers, this day also aims to raise awareness of the fundamental right of refugees to benefit from protection, to seek solutions and to fully enjoy them, etc.

” (…) With regard to Senegal, the promulgation by the President of the Republic Mr. Macky Sall of the new law on the status of refugees and stateless persons, proves that the contemporary issues related to forced displacement are well understood and that the recommended solutions are considered in this country,” said the coordinator of the United Nations system in Senegal, Aminata Maïga.

According to her, in the face of the shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and wars, nations must focus on establishing and consolidating peace and continue to provide financial support to meet the immense need expressed by forcibly displaced people. .

However, she continued, mobilizing resources for refugees remains a major challenge and all organizations working in this sector know that their mission is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve.

”This reminds us that the solidarity that we salute today must be strengthened and oriented towards the search for lasting solutions to continue to guarantee the well-being of people forced to settle by force far from their country of origin. ‘, she insisted.

For her, the establishment of mechanisms favoring refugees remains a guarantee of hope for those who are far from home and the inclusion of successful integration makes them dignified and relieves them of the burden of displacement.

”It is time that we all commit to integrating refugees into our communities at all levels, our schools, our workplaces, our health systems, beyond as the Kenyan government is doing”, for its part, indicated, the representative of the multi-country office of the UNHCR, Aly Mahamat.

He also called for recognizing the challenges faced by host countries in this world in need of peace. “Many host countries have the will to welcome refugees, but need more investment and support to do so,” he noted.

However, he lamented that long-term solutions for people forced to dig remain desperately rare, leaving many of the world’s 35 million refugees in limbo.

“Given the situation in which refugees live in Senegal, mobility must be encouraged by issuing conventional travel documents to anyone who requests them,” argued the chairman of the committee of representatives. Refugees in Senegal (CRRS), Saint-Clair Cottaud.

He also called on UNHCR to increase the amount allocated to their professional scholarship.
