World Press Photo Regional Winners: A Showcase of Powerful Photojournalism

2024-04-06 08:00:00

No less than 3851 photographers from 130 countries. A total of 61,000 images submitted. The World Press Photo this week revealed the 24 winning photos of its annual regional competition. Here are five favorites that illustrate the best of photojournalism.

This image appeared on the photo feeds of Agence France-Presse and Getty Images during the powerful earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in February 2023, causing more than thousands of victims.

A man holding the hand of his dead daughter under the rubble. His look, the scale of the destruction and the inert hand on the mattress arouse great emotion in anyone who sees this image. A photo that will haunt me for a long time.

Portrait of Lotomau Fiafia and her grandson John on Kioa Island, Fiji, August 8, 2023.

A grandfather standing in the water with his grandson. They are almost submerged. The place was not chosen at random. Rising sea levels are dramatic and threaten residents of the island of Kioa in northeastern Fiji.

The high contrast of this image is assumed. The light at the end of the day is warm and adds an aesthetic element. The look of the grandfather and his grandson testifies to the urgent situation.

Hats off to Eddie Jim who took the time to get wet…literally. With his camera, the photographer captured the details under the surface of the water, which makes this image original and striking.

The image is well framed. The lines are straight, uniform. The eye automatically goes to the young man, in sandals, who is walking on the roof of a moving freight train.

The strength of this image is that the photographer captured the decisive moment. With his foot in the air, between two wagons, this migrant is heading, at his own risk, towards an unknown future.

Alejandro Cegarra has been working for several years on a colossal project: documenting the long route of migrants to the border between Mexico and Texas.

I have seen a lot of images of the war between Hamas and Israel. But this one stands out for its simplicity. A woman walks alone trying to get away from the rubble.

It’s simple, but it’s all there. The smoke still emanating from the ruins demonstrates the extent of the destruction. The overexposed sky adds an end-of-the-world feel to this already dramatic photo.

Firefighter Théo Dagnaud observes the horizon during forest fires, in northern Quebec, July 13, 2023.

Photo : World Press Photo / Charles-Frederick Ouellet

Quebec photographer Charles-Frédérick Ouellet won an award for this image taken during last year’s forest fires in northern Quebec. What extraordinary news!

A forest firefighter, Théo Dagnaud, looks towards the horizon to spot smoke. This visual inspection is necessary to ensure that the fires in a given sector are under control.

For the media, it is very difficult to obtain the necessary access to follow the SOPFEU teams. But Charles-Frédérick Ouellet was there because he himself is also a forest firefighter, and he was able to take advantage of this access to take a remarkable photo.

The skeletons in the forest in the background clearly show the devastation. The black mass of the rock, in the center, is topped by the firefighter. How did he get there? Intriguing.

The sober use of black and white lends itself well to this image. Unlike what is frequently seen in photos submitted to this competition, contrast was used sparingly. Well done.

Charles-Frédérick Ouellet is the first Quebecer to achieve this feat in 25 years. The last Quebecer who was one of the winners of this prestigious competition is the legendary Roger Lemoyne (Bravo once more, Roger!), who documented the war in Kosovo.

The winners of the global competition will be revealed on April 18.
