But what is it? This is the little novelty present on the Tour & Taxis site in Brussels since the beginning of April. The World of Mind (WOM) offers an immersive, interactive and sensory journey. Tempora designed the museum to put visitors’ brains to the test through nearly 120 experiences. Come on, we’re taking you…
Third museum of its kind, the World of Mind (Wom) opened its doors on March 31 at Tour & Taxis in Brussels, just next to the Gare Maritime. Nearly 120 experiments demonstrate the limits of the brain through a course that extends over 1,500 m2.
“Illusions are a vector for talking regarding the brain, they are not an end in themselves. Our trump card is to challenge the brain. There is the playful aspect but we go further. We try that knowledge is also invited and that visitors come out thinking”, explains Henry Dupuis, scriptwriter of the exhibitions at Tempora, who presents himself as a “storyteller”.
Fun, interactive and immersive
Everything is done to “destabilize” and show the difference between reality and reality. “Every brain works differently and reacts differently. Not everyone will have the same experience,” says Raphaël Remiche, director of Tempora.
Optical, auditory, tactile, olfactory and gustatory illusions, the Wom solicits all the senses: losing one’s bearings in a white room as if one were in the fog of Antarctica, guessing which cube is the heaviest, changing size in a room, etc. Everything was designed according to three criteria: interactivity, immersion and fun.
“Visitors need to be constantly challenged and interacting with the illusion. We didn’t want to work only on optical illusions. So, we created an atmosphere to dive into the illusion. Finally, the illusion doesn’t work with everyone, but all of the ones we have chosen work with the majority,” says Ophélie, who has been working on the project for three years.
Each experiment is accompanied by explanations to understand what is happening. Professor Steven Laureys, Belgian neurologist, intervenes in videos, accompanied by his daughter Clara. “With this father-daughter dialogue, we want to demystify the scientific world and prove that it’s within everyone’s reach,” says Clara Laureys.
“The brain deceives us” People are there to guide, explain and also take pictures because some experiences are perfect for Instagram. “When the brain receives information that it is not used to having, it compensates for the gaps that we see. He often reconstructs many things. The brain ‘deceives’ us but not out of ‘wickedness’”, points out Henry Dupuis.
The museum is permanent but the experiences will change. “On the weekend, magicians will be present because magic is the height of brain deception”, breathes Henry Dupuis.
It is no coincidence that the Wom finds itself at Tour & Taxis. “We started here 20 years ago with our first major exhibition which was on Einstein. Over time, we have seen the site come back to life. We have always had faith in this place which is becoming a place of culture in Brussels”, concludes the screenwriter. The circle is complete.
