World Mental Health Day, 10 October 2024
“Mental health in the workplace”
On this year’s World Mental Health Day, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners will make a concerted effort to highlight the fundamental link between mental health and work. Safe and healthy work environments can provide a protective factor for mental health. On the other hand, unhealthy conditions, which include stigma, discrimination, exposure to risks such as harassment, and other poor working conditions, can pose significant risks that affect mental health and overall quality of life, and therefore participation or productivity at work. Since 60% of the world’s population is working, it is necessary to take urgent measures to create a work environment that ensures the prevention of the risks of mental health disorders and the protection and support of mental health at work.
It is essential that governments, employers, organizations representing workers, employers and other stakeholders responsible for worker health and safety collaborate to improve mental health in the workplace. Workers, their representatives and people with lived experience of mental health conditions should participate meaningfully in actions related to mental health in the workplace. By harnessing efforts and investing resources in evidence-based approaches and interventions in the workplace, we can ensure everyone has the opportunity to thrive in work and life. Let’s take action today for a healthier future.
